The different ways that we design our buildings and the spaces around them affects the way that they are used and the impact that their use has on lives at home, at work and within the community as well as on the environment more generally. Spanning a wide variety of forms and practices - and reflecting diverse collaborations between architects, landscape architects, urban designers, local communities and building users - sustainable projects are well-designed and seek to enhance the quality of life for people in both rural and urban environments now and in the future.

This year SEDA’s AGM is taking place in Glasgow.   An afternoon of talks at the Lighthouse on Friday 16th May will be followed by project visits on Saturday 17th May. The talks and visits will consider examples of sustainable design practice in the public and private realm and look at different ways in which design can be developed and experienced more sustainably. It will consider the roles, experiences and input of building users into the design and development of places and spaces and will look at projects which demonstrate how sustainable design can enhance people’s lives.

Elizabeth Leighton will speak about the current WWF Scotland campaign “One Planet Homes” focusing on how to retrofit our existing homes to reduce carbon emissions; Matt Bridgestock will discuss the different ways that John Gilbert Achitects’ work with clients to reduce the carbon footprint of new housing; Paul Barham will speak about sustainable design features incorporated into the Emmaus Community project; Rolf Roscher will discuss the experiences of working with the community and with artists to design and develop City Design Co-operative’s award-winning Hidden Gardens; Justin McNeil will speak about how Collective Architecture’s design for the Boilerhouse community building project responded to its’ setting within the Hidden Gardens and Karen Anderson, architect and member of A+DS Advisory Board, will describe Anderson Bell and Christie’s masterplanning guide for sustainable design in Argyll and Bute.

Tombreck/SEDA Volunteering Weekend

31 May/1 June
Tombreck Farm, by Aberfeldy

We had hoped to start raising the walls for a two storey non-load-bearing strawbale house at Tombreck over the weekend, but the atrocious weather has delayed preparations. Instead we shall be applying lime-wash to two recently restored buildings.

Simple vegetarian food will be provided, but you'll need to arrange your own accomodation: there are plenty of gorgeous camping spots. There are also B&Bs and hotels nearby. For more information or to book a place, please contact Willy Graham Tel: 01506 834587

Dates for other work weekends year are: 28/29 June, 26/27 July, 23/24 Aug, 20/21 Sept and 18/19 Oct
