Conservation and Sustainability: conflict or challenge? as part of the 2008 RIAS convention, SEDA linked up with the Institute of Historic Buildings Conservation for this workshop which explored where the two perspectives could work together, and where this was inappropriate. - Edinburgh

Ground Source Heat Pumps: when should they be used? an open discussion attended by 45
people - participants included members of Changeworks, Energy Savings Trust, Edinburgh University ISSTI, SBSA, housing associations, architects, facilities managers - Edinburgh

Launch of 2008 Student Travel Award - this year the award was to be allocated to students of Strathclyde University, and the launch took place at the David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability, Glasgow.


2007

Christmas Party and 'Show and Tell' - in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh University CHP - talk by David Somervelle, who had been instrumental in setting up the university's award-winning CHP system, followed by visit to one of the units.

Green Doors Open Days - a selection of environmentally friendly building projects were opened as part of the Civic Trust's Doors Open scheme.

Tombreck Volunteering Weekends - during the year several weekends were run at Tombreck in Perthshire, at which the volunteers tried their hands at lime mortar, rendering, making sheeps wool insulation and making their own lime-based paints.

Eco-renovation - a round-table discussion with the Eco-Renovation Network and hosted by Simpson & Brown in the splendidly refurbished Tobacco Merchants House, home of the Scottish Civic Trust, Glasgow.

Big Tent Festival of Stewardship - where SEDA shared a stand with Reforesting Scotland and the Association of Scottish Hardwood

Practical Course Building Post and Beam Structure - building a pavilion for the shared SEDA/Reforesting Scotland and ASHS stand at the 2007 Big Tent Festival of Stewardship in Fife

AGM and visit to Inverness, a weekend looking at Great Glen House, recently built for SHN, the Forestry commission's new district office at Smithton, buildings by Neil Sutherland Architects, and a visit to Findhorn.

Visit to Blackburn House and Edenhope: Blackburn House, an A-Listed Palladian country house, was being restored for use as a centre for creative arts and Edenhope, near Selkirk, is Andy Swales' self-build autonomous house.

‘Ecological Design as a Large Concept’ - Daniel Wahl, winner of the 2005 travel award, spoke about his three week journey to both North and South America to visit and interview a number of people who have been and are influential in shaping an emerging holistic/integral approach to sustainability. Held in Dundee.

2006

Christmas Show and Tell: once again, this popular evening, with refreshments, was held in the Friends Meeting House, Edinburgh.

Eco-Labelling Study: during the summer Rob MacWhannell was commissioned to make a study of the UK's leading building assessment tools and procedures. Jointly funded by SEDA and the Built Environment Partnership.

Student Travel Award Winner and Talks by Fionn Stevenson and Alice Bently: Fionn gave a presentation on her recent thesis on ‘Materiality: People, Place and Sustainable Resource Use in Architecture’ and Alice gave an illustrated talk about the new Johnston Central Library and Farnham Centre in Canavan, Ireland.

SEDA Stand at The Big Tent - 2006 was the first year of the Big Tent Festival of Stewardship at Falkland, Fife, and SEDA and Reforesting Scotland jointly set up a stand with displays and practical activities

Tombreck Volunteer Weekends - during the summer there were some practical work weekends preparing clay plasters, wool insulation and reed beds at the Tombreck Community, Loch Tay

Talk by Professor David Orr - on Environmental Literacy and Ecological Design. Held jointly with the School of Natural Design, Dundee University.

AGM and Visit to Isle of Bute - a sunny weekend trip to Bute, which included a visit to Bute Recycling Centre and A’Chrannag housing tower, with talks by Gerry Hogan of Chris Stewart Architects and Peter McDonald of Fyne Homes.

Presentation on the activities of SEDA and its members - this talk and slide show was given as part of the afternoon activities at the Ecology Building Society's AGM in Edinburgh.

‘Detailing for Airtightness’ - launch of the second of the three design guides being prepared by SEDA with funding from the Scottish Executive. Held at Victoria Quay, Edinburgh

Launch of 2006 Student Travel Award, followed by 2 talks: Jonathan Williams, joint winner of the 2004 award, on his visit to Ecuador, and work assisting with the development of a sustainable tourism project there, and Pete Sweetnam, Emergency Programme Manager, who spoke about Mercy Corps' work in Sumatra following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, and also their more recent response to the Pakistan earquake disaster. Held at Strathclyde University

Weekend at Mains of Branshogle - a weekend get-together to review the ativities of SEDA and do some forward planning.

Development Officer Appointed: during 2006 Esmee Fairbairn Foundation gave SEDA a three year grant for a development officer and the newly appointed candidate started work in February.

2005

Christmas Show and Tell - informal evening of slides and discussion with refreshments, in Edinburgh.

Krystyna Johnson Student Travel Award - announcement of 2005 winner, followed by a talk by James Simpson of Simpson and Brown Architects on his visit to the Golden Temple, Amritsar. James was invited over as part of a team led by the Delhi Architect, Gurmeet Rai, to advise on a conservation strategy for the Temple, holy shrine of the Sikhs. The event was held in Edinburgh.

‘Detailing for Deconstruction’ - this afternoon event, at The Lighthouse, marked the completion of the first of three design guides which SEDA received funding for in 2004 from the Scottish Executive Sustainable Action Grants. Presentations on the subject were given by Fionn Stevenson, Chris Morgan, Paola Sassi and John Addison, and the new SEDA web site designed specifically for the project was launched.

‘Against the Flow’ - a joint SEDA/SEPA seminar at the Falkirk Wheel, exploring the relationship between water, construction and the environment in Scotland. Speakers included Prof. David Crichton, Nick Grant (Elemental Solutions), Cath Hassell (Ech2o), Howard Liddell (Gaia Architects) and Chris Morgan (Locate Architects).

‘Design for Healing’ and launch of the 2005 Krystyna Johnson Student Travel Award - held at the new homoeopathic Hospital in glasgow, with talks by Dr. David Reilly and artist Jane Kelly, and James Hackett, joint winner of the 2004 student award - Glasgow

‘Eco-Design’ - an illustrated talk by Alastair Fuad-Luke, author of ‘The Ecodesign Handbook: a complete source book for the home and office’ - Dundee

Meredith Bowles of Mole Architects -gave a talk on the award winning ‘Black House’ in Ely - Edinburgh

Design for Deconstruction, jointly held with SEPA, a day exploring recycling, reuse and demountability, with case studies. Speakers were Andy Millican (materials re-use), John Addison (demountability), Paola Sassi (theories of design for deconstruction, Paula Cowie (Earthship experience), Julian Ridal Smart Waste system), Mark Wells (construction and demolition waste), Mary Kelly (case studies), Chris Morgan (from theory to practice) and Fionn Stevenson in the chair - Glasgow.

Earth Construction Evening and Launch of 2004 Krystyna Johnson Student Travel Award - with a talk by Debbie Heys, winner of the 2003 award on her project ‘Earth Construction in Scotland and Germany’, and a talk by Tom Morton on low cost new build using earth construction methods in Perthshire, plus some slides of his recent trip to look at traditional earth building in Iran.

Active Solar Myth Busting Symposium - run jointly with SSEG and Dundee Sun City. Speakers included Nicola Pearsall from Northumbria Photovoltaics Applications Centre, Kathy Hines and Bart Jan van den Brink. A great success despite the heavy snow!

 

2003

SEDA Futures - a weekend of formal and informal time together, exploring the future role and activities of SEDA, in the beautiful surroundings of a member's stable conversion in Creetown

Bridging the Gap - an exploration of what can be done to bridge the gap between large scale timber suppliers, and small scale, local, and usually more sustainable operations. Held in the Borders, with a visit to The Woodschool and OregonTimber.

Krystyna Johnson Travel Award - announcement of the award winner at The Poetry Library, Edinburgh. Followed by a Slide Show and Discussion about a recent visit to Norway organised by Gaia Research to study sustainable school buildings.

SEDA mini bus to the AECB Conference at The Earth Centre, Doncaster

Form Follows Attitude: does sustainable design have an ethic? - a debate and discussion at Pishwanton Community, East Lothianon the relationship between Easthetics and Sustainability

AGM at the Lime Centre, Charlestown. Followed by a Slide Show and discussion about the SEDA visit to Ross and Cromarty the previous year.

 

2002

Christmas Slide Show, in which members shared and discussed slides With wine and refreshments, in Perth

A Dialogue on Place-Making and Design with John Cameron, Senior Lecturer in Social Ecology, University of West Sidney. A day of practical work in which sense of place in the river valley at Abbey St. Bathans, Berwickshire was explored and worked with creatively.

Visit to BT and John Menzies a joint SEDA/ECAN tour of Rab Bennetts' offices in Edinburgh Park

Straws in the Wind: a talk by Robin Harper, MSP. Robin is MSP for the Green Party and spoke of his experience of eco-villages and communities, and his visit to Johannesburg to participate in the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Healthy Housing: Making it Mainstream - the role of sustainable development in social housing. Run jointly by SEDA and SHARE (Scottishg Housing Associations Resources for Education) at The Lighthouse, Glasgow. This event was designed to raise awareness among staff, committee members, and those working with Scottish Housing Associations of the increasing possibilities offered by the use of sustainable materials within new and refurbished housing projects.

Visit to Morayshire and Ross & Cromarty - a weekend visit, staying overnight at the Cromarty Field Centre, and including visits to Ellieside Cottage near Cullen, findhorn Eco-Village, Highland Brichwoods, Ardross Millenium Hall, and houses in Evanton and Strathpeffer.

Sustainable Materials Part 2: Earth and Clay Buildings and Products - an evening CPD seminar at The Lighthouse, Glasgow, sponsored by Errol Brick Company. Chaired by Tom Morton, speakers included Richard Shorter on Rowardennan Visitors Centre, Chris Morgan on Light Earth construction and Andrew Clegg, Director of Errol Brick Company, on the aesthetic and utilitarian aspects of ‘unfired clay products.

Breathable Walls - in thisjoint SEDA/ECAN (Edinburgh Chartered Architects Network) talk at RIAS Headquarters, Edinburgh, Richard Shorter reviewed the basic theory and principles of breathable walls, using illustrated examples.

Sustainable Materials Part 1: Timber - an evening CPD seminar at The Lighthouse, Glasgow, with Ivor Davies, Timber Research Consultant, on timber cladding, Gordon Macdonald of Carpenter Oak on timber buildings, and Iain Pirie of James Jones & Sons on sourcing Scottish timber. Chaired by John Gilbert.

Spiritual Architecture- an illustrated talk by Rudolph-Gerhard Meighoruer held at RIAS Headquarters, Edinburgh

Allergen Free Housing for the 21st Century - building materials and their impact on health, the role of the built environment inb creating allergic reactions, evidence from an investiagtion of allergy sufferers in their own homes and a look at practical measures for problem avoidance. A full day seminar run jointly with Gaia Research at Strathclyde University, Glasgow.

 


2001

Metamorphosis in Nature and Architecture - a seminar with Christopher Day and Margaret Colquhoun, run jointly with The Life Science Trust in Berwickshire

An Introduction to Ecological Design - a professional development day for teachers, design practitioners and students of design. Held at the SNH centre in Battleby.

AGM - followed by awards for the students’ competition, Dundee

Schools Ecological Design Award Scheme: Mission Sustainable - the first joint SEDA/SEPA competition for schools.

Loch Lomond Visitor Centres and Boat Trip - visiting the new Gateway and Orientation Centre at Balloch, Lomond Park Centre at Luss, and Rowardennon Visitors Centre, and including a boat tour with lunch to celebrate SEDA’s 10th anniversary.

Straw Clay Building Workdays - helping build an extension at Eildon near Melrose.

Debate on Healthy Living Centres - the judging of the competition was combined with a debate in Edinburgh Students’ Design Competition - for 2001 the brief was based on the concept of the Healthy Living Centre.

Sustainable Materials - a joint SEDA/Gaia Research CPD workshop at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh

Joint Party on the Built Evnironment - a meeting with the parliamentary joint committee and presentation on the aims and activities of SEDA members

Eco-tourism in Soquotra - a slide show and talk given by Richard Atkins in Edinburgh

 

 

 


2000

AGM and Management of Surface Runoff - a video and presentation by SEPA on developments in the management of runoff, followed by Christmas Buffet

Slides and Talk on German Tour - this was a joint event, held with the Scottish Sustainable Energy Group at The Mackintosh School of Architecture, to link up with the SEDA Members Exhibition which was on display in their Podium Gallery.

German Tour - this tour gave members an opportunity to visit the Rhur and see some of the most advanced ecological building developments in Europe, where large, commercial buildings are being developed in close association with environmental restoration of the landscape. For more information on the tour see the autumn 2000 newsletter.

Sustainable Rural Housing - a joint SEDA/Gaia Research workshop in which the criteria and case studies gathered for a report to the Scottish Executive on 'Recent Experience in Building Individual and Small Groups of houses with a View to Sustainability, the Use of Traditional and New Materials, and Innovative Design' were presented for general discussion and feedback.

Seeing the Wholenes of Nature - a two-day workshop in Abbey St. Bathans with Henri Bortoft.As an independent researcher in the Philosophy of Science, Henri's work draws, in a fundamental way, on his understanding of the scientific methods of Goethe, the psychology of perception, and the evolution of the western philosophical tradition.

Approaches to Rural Housing - with David Kanaley from Byron Shire Council, New South Wales, who was visiting Europe to study ecologically sustainable development and design, eco-villages and matters related to biodiversity conservation, environmental repair and enhancement. Also speaking was David Jarman , Head of Strategic Planning and Transport, West Lothian Council.

Stand at SFHA Conference - this year SEDA member Fionn Stevenson launched her 'Green Guide to Housing at the Aannual Scottish Federation of Housing Associations conference for Development Managers and SEDA took a stand at the conference and displayed some of the environmentally friendly materials and solutions which are available on the market.

Visit to Dumbarton Road Upgrading Scheme, Glasgow - members were shown round a tenement upgrading scheme in which the renovations and services installations had followed environmentally sound design and construction principles as far as possible.By kind invitation of SEDA member Ronnie Murray (Architect) and Meadowside and Thornwood Housing Association.

Study Weekend in Glenshee - as a follow up to the January opening of the exhibition of members’ work France Smoor hosted a study weekend at his cottage in Glenshee in which a group of members came together (with plenty of wine) to discuss, explain and criticise their best construction details and those details they believed to be a leap forward but which, so far, have not been tested.

 


1999

Architecture Policy for Scotland - a presentation and discussion on the draft policy on architecture for Scotland followed by christmas party.

Ecological Design Issues for Planners - a small group of SEDA members with experience in planning visited Dumfries to present their views and raise questions for debate in this first CPD event aimed at planners.

AGM followed by a talk by Jaochim Eble on his own work.

SEDA Student Awards judging of the annual competition at the University of Strathclyde School of Architecture Gallery after which entries were exhibited for 2 weeks.

GM Foods - what are the Implications? at the University of Aberdeen, with cases being made for and against GM developments, followed by an open discussion.

Sustainable Use of Materials - a talk on the Friends of the Earth project SURE (Sustainable Use of Resources in Europe) followed by a talk and walk round Burnett Pollock Partnership’s development at Norton Park, Edinburgh.

Rising Damp - Myth or Reality? an evening event with Brian Ridout, timber decay consultant to British Heritage, and Brian Allingham giving the solicitor’s perspective.

Guidance on Environmental Building Design - an investigation of the outstanding principal needs of designers, manufacturers and cost professionals (run in conjunction with Gaia Research). CPD.

Animal Architecture -a talk by Mike Hansell of Glasgow University on animal building methods and materials. Held at Edinburgh Zoo, with a free visit to the zoo after the talk.

 


1998

Straw Bale and Earth Construction - a talk by Danny Buck, founding member of Living Structures, a co-operative building company in New Mexico.

Bhutanese Architecture - a talk by Chris Butters

September - AGM

SEDA Reivers’ Tour - a weekend tour visiting Amazon Nails’ straw bale office, Segal self-build houses with ‘green features’ in Leeds, and the Earth Centre nearby, then returning via the Groundwork Trust, South Tyneside, and Earth Balance.

Sacred Geometry and Ecology and Informing Ecological Thinking - a weekend of talks exploring the order and meaning behind form. Guest speakers included Keith Critchlow and Henri Bortoft.

 

 

1997

Thatching Weekend - talks and practical teaching about the craft with the Life Science Trust.

Permaculture Weekend in Lancashire with the Middlewood Trust.

Using Scottish Timber in Construction - an event focusing on past and present constructional uses of home grown timber in Scotland. Put in the context of woodland ecology and management by a tour of semi-natural wood.

Meeting with Prof. Bleahu, who set up a University of Ecological Sciences in Rumania.

EcoPhilosophy - a presentation of several short papers on current PhD research in the field, followed by a discussion.

Ether Event - search for the invisible origins of form through sacred and projective geometry, colour, feng-shui, thinking, pataphysics, intuition, planning and the quality of order.

Energy Conservation and Sustainability in a Scottish context. CPD course jointly organised by SEDA, RIAS and EDAS.

Water Event - included a talk by Councillor McNulty on the politics of water; water as a renewable energy resource, hydro power, small and large scale, biological water treatment systems, tour of New Lanark.

Air Event - natural ventilation and “breathing wall” techniques. Brian Ford illustrated Short Ford’s approach; (e.g. de Montford Eng. block); other speakers discussed relevant research. Jonathan Hines (Architype) illustrated timber framed, self-build projects.

Earth Event -talks about earth as a resource, as a building material, as pigment in paints. Also lime for mortars and renders and dry composting toilet systems. Earth building workshops.

Annual SEDA Student Competition - "Green Housing as Urban Infill". Three week exhibition in Centre for Architecture and Design.

Lecture by Robert and Brenda Vale about their recently completed energy efficient house at Southwell.

Lecture by Dr. Bruce Walker on the traditional use of unfired clay for buildings in Scotland.

Newton Dee, Aberdeen Camphill Community Village. The philosophy and organisation of the village. Visits to the Steiner chapel and community hall designed by Camphill Architects. Look at the flow forms in action.

Edinburgh Environment Festival -a lecture by Howard Liddell, Chairman of SEDA, workshop by Axel Ewald and Margaret Colquhoun and evening lecture by Chris Day on his philosophy of design.

Green Show Exhibition followed by a visit to the Strathclyde University Low Energy Housing using solar heating and controlled ventilation.

Green Tourism - talk in the local LOCUS Centre in Aberfeldy (converted from a church), a visit to an award winning ecological house designed by GAIA Architects.
